icon Hi, I’m Abel Mavura

Systems Thinker | Social Entrepreneur | Advocate for Inclusive Development

I am a Zimbabwean-born, UK-based changemaker with over 13 years of experience leading transformative initiatives in youth empowerment, digital inclusion, migration, and human rights across Africa, Asia, and Europe.

As the Founder of Marvel Act Youth Organisation (MAYO) a youth-driven nonprofit based in Zimbabwe I work to empower marginalized communities through advocacy, education, and technology for social change. Our programs focus on mental health, inclusive education, and civic engagement, bridging the gap between policy frameworks and grassroots realities.

In 2025, I became the first African scholar to receive the Margaret Mead Memorial Award from the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) & International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR) in recognition of my groundbreaking doctoral research paper on migrant resilience and urban informality in Paris, France.

I am currently a Clutton-Brock Scholar at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Department of Architecture and the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies, where my research explores migration, urban informality, and the co-creation of inclusive, safe, and sustainable cities. As a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), I am deeply committed to advancing sustainable infrastructure and participatory urban futures that prioritize dignity, inclusion, and resilience.

My academic background spans Development Studies and International Affairs, with a Master’s from Sciences Po Paris – School of International Affairs. I am also an active member of the Development Studies Association (DSA), the British Sociological Association (BSA), SCiO and the ISSS, working at the intersection of systems thinking, social justice, and participatory methodologies.

Through my research, advocacy, and organizational leadership, I aim to bridge academic inquiry, policy innovation, and community-led action designing holistic and inclusive solutions that transform how societies address inequality, displacement, and urban vulnerability.

Let’s connect — collaboration, creativity, and shared purpose fuel meaningful impact.

My Story and Expertise

I am a systems thinker, author, and social entrepreneur from Zimbabwe, now based in the United Kingdom, with over 13 years of experience leading transformative development, advocacy, and design-focused initiatives across Africa, Asia, and Europe.
My work bridges architecture, urban design, and systems thinking, exploring how migration, informality, and social justice intersect to shape the built environment and collective wellbeing. As a member of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) and the British Sociological Association (BSA), I apply interdisciplinary and participatory approaches to address complex humanitarian and urban challenges.
I enrolled with the University of London Institute in Paris in 2022 and later transitioned to Africa Research University, where my doctoral research in Development Studies investigated migration, masculinity, and informal housing within broader global development systems. I am also a Clutton-Brock Scholar at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Department of Architecture and the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies, where I advance participatory research on inclusive, sustainable, and resilient cities.
Over the past decade, I have managed and implemented projects across Africa and at the global level as a consultant and development practitioner, working with a range of international organisations, including UN agencies, ActionAid, CIVICUS, IREX, and Girls Not Brides. My work has focused on youth empowerment, social protection, and inclusive governance, driving community-led impact through innovation and collaboration.
Beyond academia, I am the author of three books that explore identity, transformation, and social change reflecting my belief in the power of storytelling to inspire action. My broader interests engage with climate change, governance, and sustainable development, particularly in urban and rural communities across the Global South.
I continue to collaborate with global partners to co-create equitable, resilient, and community-driven responses to today’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.
